Hey all,
I was wondering where people from wizarding families go to before they attend a school of magic. I can understand muggle-borns, like Harry and Hermione. But what about Ron and Draco. Do they get home-schooled or what. Or do they just wait to go to school for the first time? alien.gif
Karen
I would imagine they get homeschooled so they would be able to read and write etc.
They obviously dont have a wizards primary school as they dont know eachother although, I've always thought they'd be fun to write in a fanfic! smile.gif Maybe it would be kinda difficult for the teacher to cope when the kids start using their magic!

I dunno, I always figured they were home-schooled. They probably don't usually learn too much magic before starting school since Ron didn't know too much more than anybody else when they started. I assume they must learn how to read and write and do basic math, because none of the characters seem to be ignorant of such things. Who knows. Well, I'm sure JKR does, but until she shares her views with us, I guess all we have is speculation.

I dunno either, I always just thought that it was something they learned like walking and talking and all. Plus, they don't go to school for a longer period of time than us, so they probably just learn that kinda stuff after a certain age or something. I dunno...

I would think that they would go to a prep-magic school. They would problably learn different things like learn how read and write. Also learn what basic witchcraft materials that they would be using in Hogwarts. So when they get to Hogwarts they would have an idea of what they are working with so they wouldn't be lost like harry when he first went to Hogwarts.

Well, we can make the assumptions that:-

If they attend school, they learn no magic whatsoever, as we learn from Ron that his 'brothers' taught him a new spell, which infact doesn't work. This implies that he has never had a wand before, because he's never had a chance to test the spell. Or at least not extensively enough that he believes it doesn't work.

With not even Malfoy having a broomstick prior to Hogwarts, we can assume they do not fly or do anything to that degree prior to Hogwarts.

They do not go to muggle schools, having no concept of anything related to the muggle world.

So where does that leave us?

The only answer, in my opinion, is that they live at home. If they went to a primary school of sorts then surely they would be taught spells, even if they wern't allowed to do them. I'd expect that a teacher would tell them a spell and then do the spell as a demonstration or something to that degree.

Furthermore, they arn't certain, prior to Neville getting his Hogwarts letter, that Neville will infact be a wizard. That would imply that they have no way of knowing if they are a witch or a wizard until the Hogwarts letter, or at least no way of confirming it. So up until that point, the child could still be without magic, so why bother training it like a wizard, or even showing it what magic is?

The children don't know each other prior to Hogwarts, either. I really can't think of what they'd do prior to Hogwarts, except perhaps be taught the basics like english. What I don't understand, though, is how the parents could be the teachers of that, if they didn't go to highschool themselves and therefore would have a limited education that they probably can't even remember.

I thing they get hometeaching of Reading, Writing and other necisities like basic science and mathematics. That's the only logical point i can think about.
Gaia13
I think that it might just be like pre-school, where they teach you some basic stuff, but it's really not that big of a deal. And if you grow up with, say, a chemist for a dad, you would probably know more about chemistry than the others in your class when you go to school because you've just picked some stuff up along the way. Or like I'm 14, and I'm going to get my permit soon, but I've watched my parents drive a car so much that I have a vauge idea of what I would need to do to drive. You know? If that makes any sense at all...

sigh. it'll be nice to know that they went to muggle schools. (is it just me or is muggle knowledge somewhat belittled? hehe.) but like what you guys said, they were probably homeschooled or tutored.

Daily Class Schedule?

does anyone have harrys class schedule worked out you know monday he has this this and this.

if there is no such thing anyone have a made up one that works?
need it for my fic Reboot

thanks
Jessie Flower
It usually changes every year, but I think you can find his fifth year schedule on the harry potter lexicon.
lordanhur
I need the daily schedule for the first year does anyone have it? if not a true schedule (canon) one the works out logicly with the clues jk gives.
Anazecria
The place you are most likely to get it is The Lexicon. They have calendars for all the events in the books, but they only have the timetables for their lessons worked out for GoF and OotP.

on a normal year, school ends the second week of June, and starts up again of course on Sept 1. That's according to the lexicon, I believe, IIRC
puck_nc
The best guess I have is from around June 30-Sept. 1. A lot of the references point to the kids being at Hogwarts through most of June and of course the kids report to the Hogwarts Express on Sept. 1.
RomRom1192
Hmm... I'm not too sure, but I'm guessing the first week of June, and then, of course, September 1st. Here in my school, we're done on June first--though that's probably because we're graduating and get to leave early--but that's beyond the point.

Possibly the first or second week of June and then Sept. First. So, I'd go with that... or at least, that's what I do/did/will do... whatever...

Heh, till the next,

pre-Hogwarts schools for young wizards & witches?

I'm writing a fic where Ginny has a daughter who is six years old. That got me wondering though on whether they have a sort of 'primary school' system for young children. Obviously in the muggle world you do, but what about the wizarding world? I don't think it is mentioned anywhere in the books, so I'm a bit stuck in wondering what they actually do and what they would learn if they did have primary schools.
GemmaH121
I don't think it ever says anything. Orginally I thought that maybe they go to muggle primary schools until their magical abilities emerge but maybe not. There could be wizarding primary schools but then why aren't they mentioned. I guess it wasn't that important to the story. Um what would they learn. I think they might just learn about magic and the magical world but not so specifically as at hogwarts and not using it. It's kind of up to you I think on this as there's no canon on it. I think i've seen in one fic that they are home schooled until they go to hogwarts.

That's my thinking anyways.

Home school works, I guess. Maybe I'll go with that. Thanks smile.gif

Every time I read a fanfic with Harry and Hermione having young children, they usually have entered them into muggle primary school or a magical primary. When they do do this, some even paint homeschooling as barbaric and only wizards do it.

Is there a fic where H/hr homeschool? Do you think they would?

Do you think homeschooling is bad? And why?
GemmaH121
I've seen one where it mentions that the kids were home schooled but doesn't go into details. I think homeschooling make senses as if they were sent to muggle primary schools then wouldn't they understand more about muggle stuff then they do. A magical primary school maybe but then how come they don't seem to really know anyone when they come to Hogwarts. I mean sure there are lots more people at highschools but normally at least a few people from primary school go to the same highschool. I don't think homeschooling is bad. It suits some peoples situation and can work better for some kids.

Hey! My computer's messing up on me, sorry I couldn't reply earlier...

I think it would definiteley be better for a wizarding family to homeschool. It would be a bad idea to have a 7 year-old, knowing that he's a wizard, running around a muggle school. And since it's hinted that Wizards gain their powers at different times, it wouldn't be smart to enter them in an all-magic school.

Thanks for the reply!
GemmaH121
Yeah that's true I hadn't thought about that. But I did think homeschooling made more sense. I don't see why people don't think so. But I guess it never says so people can do what they like in stories.
