Alright, I've just finished reading all 23 pages of this thread, and have finally come to the point where I can mention one of my favorite "subtle H/Hr moments."

In GoF, chapter 18 (The Weighing of the Wands - pg.289 [Amer. hardback]), Harry and Hermione meet just outside the Gryffindor common room.

QUOTE
"Hello," [Hermione] said, holding up a stack of toast, which she was carrying in a napkin. "I brought you this.... Want to go for a walk?"

This happens right before the famous walk-around-the-lake scene (which is a great moment in and of itself), but what I love about this moment is that Hermione brings toast. Weird, I know, but hang on - I'll explain.

If you'll notice, whenever Harry is upset in the mornings, he eats toast if anything at all. Just plain and simple toast. (I don't even think he drinks anything with it most of the time.) Anyway, he does it again in OotP on the morning of his hearing at the Ministry, and it seems like he does it other times as well - like before his first ever Quidditch match (and some of the other more dreaded ones) and the tasks of the Triwizard Tournament (I think).

Hermione remembers this about him, and she doesn't bring him a whole plate full of food. She just brings toast. Something about it just makes me smile. biggrin.gif

Harmony forever!

I never noticed that he always ate toast when he's upset. Good catch, stu14688!

I remember that scene, but I never realized how he always eats toast when he's nervous, scared, and anxious.

I know for certain that he does twice (this scene and the one in OotP before the hearing), but I think he does it several other times as well. I'd look it up, but I don't have all the books with me.
mathiasgranger
Well Hermione seems to understand Harry doesn't have much of an appetite before such things...and toast is a safe comfort food for Harry.

pg 184 S/S "Just a bit of toast." Wheedled Hermione

Accio Harry!
I LOVE e-books! I just search the word "toast" and ta-da! Check out this little bit:

"Haven't even started," said Harry, looking jealously at the toast and
marmalade Ron and Hermione had brought out of the Great Hall.
"Wood's been teaching us new moves."

Hmmm... weird...

But, anyhoo, there are many, many times harry is shown eating toast. Of all the mention of toast in the books, it's usually Harry.

mathiasgranger - good point. Toast is shown as a comfort food for Harry:

'What do you want, Harry?' Mrs Weasley called. 'Porridge? Muffins? Kippers?
Bacon and eggs? Toast?'

'Just - just toast, thanks,' said Harry.

(This is right before he goes to his hearing and he's really nervous)

Also, to be noted:

When Harry eats Berty Bott's every flavor Beans with Ron, on his first journey to Hogwarts, one of them is toast-flavored.

When Hermione stops her hunger strike, protesting House Elf slavery in Hogwarts, her first food is toast.

When Hermione figures out how to help Harry clear his name, via Quibbler/Rita, she takes some toast and heads to the library.

Ah, I love analyzing, LOL.

And your a terrific analyzer.

WOAH we've got some SERIOUS "subtle" action goin' on here now! tongue.gif tongue.gif
These analyzations are either genius or really off-the-wall crazy! Wait, those two are the same thing aren't they? biggrin.gif

When it comes to JK, you've got to dig deep... I just hope we're digging in the right direction. Sometimes when I post, I re-read it and think "really? Are you sure you want to post that, loony?"... yep!
Arm_Wild
lol well the thing is, most of these are probably really loony speculations by crazed shippers (no offense) BUT,

probably a few out of these many are no coincidence. She DOES like to be subtler than most authors, and we've noticed so many hints, so the laws of probability point to a few of them being on the mark... hopefully.

I just getting done watching POA on T.V. and it reminded me of the video game. Where you could ride Buckbeak around the castle for various jobs and for fun. I first got Harry to ride, then decided if Hermione or Ron could. Both Harry and Hermione bow to Buckbeak and they climb on to take off. But if Ron tries to even go near Buckbeak he gets knocked down. I always found that odd yet reassuring. It's not a book moment, but it's somewhat subtle right? blush.gif
mathiasgranger
This is my not so subtle anti-R/Hr moment in the POA movie...

Ron and Draco act alike when they get injured...looking for attention and sympathy....Harry never does...is that a coincidence? They both talk about their injuries being so serious that they almost warrant amputation.

In my opinion Ron and Draco seem to have very similar personalities placed into very different situations...

I've always thought that they made Ron act that way to compensate for the lack of the Sirius break-in (with the knife at Ron's bed). He was such an attention-seeking prat after that happened, so it was their way to show it in the movie, I guess.

I had forgotten about that! Urgh, Ron was such an attention ######! LOL, Didn't he make himself a lot more braver each time he told the story? (Or was that just when he told the story about being in the black lake during the second task?)

I love that part in GoF when Ron's doing the same thing, except you know with the whole he warded off and fought all the mer-people on his own, etc, etc and Hermione's like 'what were you going to do, snore at them?' Granted it's not a subtle HHR moment, but still as anyone can tell after she got to shore from the 2nd task...she was so happy with Harry's bravery that it was like she didn't want it to be taken away from him by Ron's prattle. And she wanted everyone to stop making fun of her for the thing Krum would miss most...but still, we all know she loves Harry! blush.gif

LOL, Yeah, Hermione really shut Ron up.

I thought it was cute how when Krum kept trying to get Hermione's attention she kept ignoring him so she could keep talking to Harry. wub.gif
mathiasgranger
The uniting factor is Ron tries to draw attention to himself and Harry tries to get people to ignore him....

Who would Hermione prefer?

Then I love how Harry is portrayed as an attention seeker in OOTP...when once again it is Ron...the 'King'

Thoughts on that?

I don't know if this has been said, but...

I have many favorite subtle moments, but upon re-reading the Harmony bible (OoTP) I found another one. It's during Snapes Occlumency lesson, and Harry's being forced to relive bad memories.

Page 534, U.S. Edition, Chapter 24

QUOTE
He was five, watching Dudley riding a new red bicycle, and his heart was bursting with jelousy...He was nine, and Ripper the bulldog was chasing him up a tree and the Dursleys were laughing below on the lawn...He was sitting under the Sorting Hat, and it was telling him he would do well in Slytherin...Hermione was lying in the hospital wing, her face covered with think black hair...

Of all the memory he see's, all the bad ones, Ron is not mentioned once. The other memories he see's include Cedrics death, his parents, and him facing the hungarian horntail-the moments in his life he has felt the most emotion-and not the good emotions: fear, grief, longing...

Oh...very good find! I didn't catch that. I hope we can see more of this subtle kind in HBP... wub.gif

You guys all realize that if Snape ever got to really do occulmency on him again Hermione falling at the DoM would be one of his head's first images... whistling.gif ??

Great find!
I love that Hermione being turned into cat is a worse mermory than Ginny's life-less body lying in the CoS. Just goes to show where Harry's priorities are.

yeah....I thought at first that probably he hasn't had any encounter with Ginny till Ginny-sue in HBP that would give a lasting impression on him. But yeah, Ginny lifeless should have left an imprint...hmmm

I brought that up on EW.net a while back to shut the Herons and Chocos up, LOL! Ginny almost lost her life, but he sees Hermione when dosed with a wayward Polyjuice... lovely.

I never noticed that either. Great moment, and a great arguement!

Well, no wonder Harry knows her schedule since he's desperate to hang out with her. biggrin.gif
