YAY! I half converted one of my friends. She's mostly a Dramione shipper who also likes canon, but I showed her some fab videos and fanfics, and now she says HHR is really growing on her, and she's seeking out videos and fics on her own! Plus she loves my writing, so there's a dose of HHR too.
thewall28304
My cousin and I are the only ones I know of whose read the books and I don't think she has a specific ship preference, but sadly for me she excepts canon. My mom and two of my uncles on the other hand are H/Hr shippers, primarily because they've only seen the movies. and when I told my mom that DH ended H/G and R/Hr her response was "Get out of town". She couldn't believe it and now I don't think I'll be able to convince her to read the series, even if she was mildly curious about it. It's amazing that whether you've read the Potter series or not those that love the H/Hr ship, are left scratching their heads as to why they didn't end up together, when all the evidence that had been gathered over the years pointed to their pairing. I guess that's what's makes H/Hr wonderfully beautiful and bittersweet is that circumstances kept them from becoming a canon couple, yet their relationship was proven the strogest in the series. It makes me very proud that some in my family sees what I do about H/Hr and why it doesn't matter what JKR says otherwise.

Me and my mother are the only ones reading HP in my family and my friends doesn't too. She has never been really into shipping, but she mild accepting of RHr. However, since reading DH she has admitted the canon ships aren't right, which is the nearest I can get from her to be a real Harmonian. biggrin.gif

I've been hanging out with most of my cheerleading buddies and basketball firends the past couple of days (we were the only poor souls on campus for a few days). And me and the grls were talking about love and being bitter (b/c we were watching a Walk to Remamber and not believing that their are guys like that in real life..yea we were ignored by the boys...and they left to go to McDonalds) And I told them that I was depressed bc my fav couple in HP didn't get together and they asked me who that was. And i told them Harry and Hermione didn't get ogether. And to my surprise...they were shocked and confessed to e that they'd read or had HP read to them...up to like book 4 (when the pairings were aparently so obvious)and saw up to movie 3...they all thought that H/hr were gonna get together. *shrugs* I guess the pairings weren't so obvious whistling.gif

I know what you mean. I was in that situation as well..I was kind of depressed when H/hr didn't end up together from final book.and then my sister and her friend asked me why?..I was down. I told her that my favorite pairing didn't end up together. For my suprised they were 'shocked' as well..

My sister friend thinks that red-hair-Ron?..is Ginny..don't asked why. My sister hated Ron like passion..she thinks he is loser..

Well, you have all of my support. As I said, my mother was into mild acceptance of RHr before DH. Every time I brought up HHr she would tell me "They are just friends". So i can relate to you to a certain extent... smile.gif

Why do they think this?

My mom and dad both like the canon pairings (r/hr and d/g) but , get this, my mom used to like H/Hr! she converted and said "ron/hermione just became so obvious!" I practically die every single time I argue about h/hr to r/hr and h/g. my family is against me. I have, though, turned one of my penpals half h/g and r/hr to part h/hr. My group of three other friends (4 if you include me) 1 can't read it bt she still thinks that from what ive told her, that h/hr should've been together, the other two, well, they agree with me but they don't read it. they have just watched up to 3 or 4 in the movies.
GreyWolf
I just had a conversation with my friend and she said Ron and Hermione were the worst couple imaginable and she was hoping Harry and Hermione were going to get together.

Don't take what I'm about to say the wrong way, but I have never understood people who convert from something that they supposedly believe in, in this case your mom converting from H/Hr to R/Hr JUST BECAUSE IT BECAME OBVIOUS! We should always stick to our convictions. Perhaps your mom didn't have the passion about H/Hr that some of us do (like me!). It doesn't matter to me one little bit that Rowling made it R/Hr because to me it was always, and will always be Harmony. I'm a hopeless romantic! But I have to say that it annoys me to no end that Rowling made it H/G! Now that was just totally uncalled for! innocent.gif

Well, my step-sister is a R/Hr, H/G shipper... and she doesn't read or watch anythng Harry Potter...dont ask.

And everyone else in my family doesn't really care.

But I remember when I was younger, way before Harry Potter even came out, I asked my mom if love is when you fought with someone a whole lot, or if it was the person you respected the most, who was your best friend, and who you were always there for, and always understood one another.

Anyways, I remember her looking at me shell-shocked, and replying with,

QUOTE
Now now sweetie, you should know, any woman would no doubt much rather have the best friend, than the fighting with someone.... some people of course, would have the fighting with someone, but if that's the case, there is without a doubt, they've fallen in love with the best friend.

So, in general,... that made no sense, did it? biggrin.gif

My mom agress with me about Harry/hermione
my dad thought harry was going to ask hermione to the yule ball. He even asked why they do not go together, I said Im asking the same question when I read the book.
My older sister does not think much abot them.
My twin likes them and so do our friends they think Ron treats her badly for a guy who in love with her and they only watched the movies.
LolitaScarlet
My mum can't stand Harry Potter, so she doesn't have any views on the relationships within the series. My dad though, was a R/Hr shipper which saw me getting teased something shocking. My younger sister though, was with me on the stand of Harry/Hermione. So were a handful of my friends. They thought it just made sense. happy.gif

My parents were against me. Well that's not completely true, my mother was against me. Dad just was silent about the whole thing going "eh... why should I care?"

My mother was (she passed away Feb 2008) a vehement R/Hr shipper. She also said that after reading that train sequence that she knew that H/G were going to happen sometime later. She gave her arguments quite well and seemed "well versed" on the subject of "love" and "attraction". Then I thought of the kind of marriage my parents had, and realized that my mother was really just substituting herself for Hermione and my dad for Ron, and that she really wasn't that far off in some cases...

Anyway, I later watched Spirited Away with her, and she never say the whole Chihiro/Haku thing coming and was actually expecting it to be revealed that they were brother and sister.

So clearly it's a values/generational difference in my case.

To my friends I'm the odd one who doesn't like the last two books. There is one friend who didn't like Deathly Hallows at all nor the whole idea of H/G calling it "lust". However she didn't mind the R/Hr pairing.

By the by, being in Europe, I recently talked with a person who's only read the first two books and she, being curious, asked my opinion about the series as a whole. I told her that I simply wasn't a fan of the last two books, nor was I fan of the pairings the author chose. She said that she's heard people talk in Europe about how generally the ending (to the series) is thought to have "been horrible", most pointing out the Epilogue as the problem. In introduced her to the word "Crapilogue" and she enjoyed the laugh about it.

Salamon2 - how was thier relationship like if you do not mind me asking?

I had a funny experience at work the other day that I wanted to share with you guys.

My Maiden name is Potter and I still haven't gotten around to changing it with the company I work for. Anyway there is a paticular manager at work that is a fan of the Harry Potter series and I only really knew this because everytime he walked past my desk he would say "Potter" like Snape says to Harry in the movies.

So I was at a work function the other day and he mentioned to me that he'd seen the Goblet of Fire movie only recently and we got talking about the series and I found out that he had actually read the books as well. I wasn't expecting this from him cause he's my Boss' Boss... but so anyway I asked him what he thought of the last book and he said he only read the ending! I teased him for a bit about that then asked what he thought of the ending and was shocked and delighted by his response.

"It was terrible, who is that Ginny girl? Harry should have ended up with Hermione. I don't understand why she would be with Ron, they would kill each other!"

So my Boss's Boss is now officially the only person I have ever met in R/L who is a H/Hr shipper!

Funny how the world works.

Well, in my family only my brother and I follow Harry Potter series and it was by movies. We never talk about that because it's was always a movie that we both liked. I have two friends (they're married and I'm their two daughters godmother) that follow the movies two. I'm the only one who had read the books. These friends always believed in R/Hr and they find dout very funny what I told them how the shipping were conducted It was the only thing I told them. And about the Hermione's torture because of the girls. I advised them to watch first and then see if the girls can see it) And they got a surprise: Harry are going to marry Ginny? But she barely appears in the movie!

None of them are massively into Harry Potter, however, they do all like Harry and Hermione. My Mum always says, ‘Why did Hermione and Ron end up married? They’re not at all suited!’

Mom was driven crazy with worry because Dad liked to slack off on things a lot, while Mom had been raised with the impression that "the man of the house should do blah blah blah". She often felt as if she had to do things that my dad should have done and often threw that argument at him. Mom felt she had to keep up with the frantic pace that the "real world" was going at.

Dad didn't appreciate her nagging at all. He liked to take life at a slower, less hectic pace. Dad had personality problems and bosses were often fond of laying him off. He didn't like how modern life seemed to be going out of control. He wanted a simpler life where he didn't have to worry about everything.

If you want a picture of their dynamic, here's part of an episode from the twilight zone which I think displays the type of relationship they had. The depiction doesn't appear until about 0:53, but even so...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd2neJ30vf4...=PL&index=1

Poor me would often get stuck in the middle between them whenever they argued, and that was not fun.

My friends don't really have any problem with it. They don't ship anything that really had a chance of happening. They mainly ship slash couples like Harry/Draco. Pretty much anything is fine with them.

The only person in my family who has even read the books is my brother-in-law and he doesn't pay attention to ships.

Well, the last time I spoke to my eldest she was still a 'militant' Harmony shipper.

Husband thinks JKR either went off her meds or needed meds after he read book 6 because he thought it was as crappy as I do and he told me back at the time book 4 came out that he thought ron was a nasty little part of male anatomy *I have a feeling even in the ROR the filters won't let me use the word husband said* for treating Hermione like crap all the time and thought that Harry and Hermione would make a good match in the end.

Needless to say after he read book 6, he didn't spend any more money on HP stuff at all and that meant the last things we bought were those damned book 6s he pre-paid in advance ordering before they got to book stores and he feels like we got really ripped off. So, the last PC game was for book 3, and that goes for movies too. We got free tickets for movie 4 and husband and I both thought it was total crap *except for the dragon and we liked that and the bit where Hermione rushed into the tent before the dragon battle to hug Harry and the part where Harry sees Hermione coming down the stairs in her Yule ball dress for the first time too but the rest ~ ick* and so we didn't bother buying the DVD for that and no toys or any other stuff since.

I even got little one trained to say 'ron is icky and yucky and mean to Hermione' and she is so adorable when she says it too. At school they play the HP movies *1 and 2 only since the movies 3 & 4 and up would scare little kids in her Special Needs class* sometimes and she stands up and points at the TV and says it in the middle of her class and her teachers smile and nod and give her a sticker. laugh.gif I guess they have read the books too and know which couple is the right choice rather than the 'easier' choice.

HH-inlove.gif

That's so funny about your little girl saying that, PJ. We have the HP games up to 5, and Zack always wanted to know why Ron runs away from trouble, and I told him over and over that wonwon runs from trouble cos he's a big ol chicken. Then he would ask me why Ron always complains about things, and I told him that wonwon is a whiner. So now when he plays the games, he goes 'Look mom, Ron keeps whining about the giant bee things, the big chicken'. laugh.gif lol.gif

HH-inlove.gif
PJlikesAUfanfic
That is true, wonwon is a whiner big time. And speaking of games, when little one and I play the movie 3 game (I say movie since they are not based on the books and feature characters that look like the actors from the movies) on the PC which is one that you have to play all 3 characters of the trio, little one gets mad when the game gives you no choice in which character to use. She wants to play as Hermione and when it is Hermione's turn she keeps trying to zap ron with the wand and gets mad when it doesn't work!

Really little one is sitting here trying to zap ron and yelling Diffendo! at the computer and is huffed when it doesn't blast ron off the screen!

And she hates it when it is ron's turn to do things. She doesn't like that at all and sometimes starts over again at the last saved spot to replay either Harry or Hermione or makes me play ron just to hurry through it to get to the next Harry or Hermione part. Smart girl. wub.gif

laugh.gif That's my baby! Gotta love my baby.

Oh and on movie 2 game when it comes to the part in the forest when ron is supposed to go with Harry but the game has the little chicken take off and Harry has to go by himself instead, little one says that the spiders are supposed to chase ron and try to eat him and gets mad that he only shows up AFTER Harry defeats the big bad spider at the end with the car and gets more mad when ron won't let Harry drive because she said he drives bad because he smashed the car into the tree at the start of the game and was too stupid and the tree didn't squish him like it was supposed to... hum wonder where she got those ideas from... whistling.gif must have been when husband was playing with her and he was mad that he could not use his natural 'wording' when describing the little idiot rodent around little ears so he took out his frustrations in other ways... that and I must have mumbled similar things while I was playing too... whistling.gif

Do your friends or family read/watch the books/movies? If so, what do they think of romance in them?

My mum she watches the movies and she likes H/Hr.

My dad doesn't care. XD

Oh and my friends... they don't like it. But they only like slash ships. x.x'

My parents were the first ones to watch Harry Potter 1 & 2. Well, come to think of it, they thought of the H/Hr idea too. When I became a hardcore Harry Potter fan, I got into the scenes. xD when I was groaning over some R/Hr scenes, my parents would ask, "Why are you groaning anyway? I thought you like the book." I would just shut up. xD And then whenever I watch the movies, my mom would say, "They would end up with each other." I never had the nerve to say R/Hr was going to happen, but I said it. Apparently, she wasn't affected, but she sees how bummed I get. She likes H/Hr, since she was asking me how'd that happen, and she thinks Harry and Hermione has more chemistry. My dad... haha he doesn't get shipping.

My pals, well... they ship H/Hr too! But different reasons. Among my friends and myself, I'm the only one who read the books and love them. Another classmate of mine reads the books but she's not a big fan, but she still ships H/Hr. They just watch the movies, catch glimpses of trailers or catch me reading in school and notice some lines (or as they call 'tiny print').

The ones who watch the movies, well, they comprehend the H/Hr scenes. When I was telling one of my best friends about R/Hr in the epilogue, some of them would butt in and ask, "Whuuuuut? I thought he's gonna marry Hermione. And who's that Ginny girl?" I'd laugh. They beg for spoilers and still don't understand why Ron and Hermione ended up with each other or say it's not a good ending and they don't like the couples. One friend who adores the movies was ranting about Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione. I was laughing so hard, I almost toppled off my chair. xD

All I know is, mainly, my family and friends ship H/Hr because they think the hero fits the heroine. xD But at least I'm not the only Harmonian in my community. laugh.gif

My uncle and his family visited us over the Labor Day weekend and while we were talking about Harry Potter,he flat out said he thought Ron was a nerd. He also thinks Harry's a nerd too,but at least he and Hermione make alot more sense than R/Hr. It's amazing how our family members or friends that have not read the books, can be objective and see why OBWF doesn't work. If it made sense to everyone, our family and friends wouldn't have the puzzled looks on their faces when we try to explain the epilouge. This latest HP adaptation of HBP didn't convince the critics or the general public, that the story is heading towards the OBWF ending. It says alot about the writing if the whole audience doesn't buy it and the non-readers see the same flaws that we do.
drlizmd
Everyone I know now is into Twilight and I'm surrounded by the different pairings from that.

Before Twilight, there was a divide. My friends supported R/Hr and I was alone with H/Hr. I came late to the party (so to speak) and my initial read (with no influence anywhere) found me seeing Harry and Hermione together. My friends thought I was nuts! My best friend and I even placed a wager.

My mom and most of my cousins just read the books with no relationship expectations in mind. They took it as was and supported whoever came from the end.

My one cousin followed me and loves H/Hr. She can't understand what Hermione sees in Ron!

I sail alone on the good ship and love every minute!
DHSucked
Twilight is so overrated. In COS I thought Ginny was cute with her crush, but I always wanted Harry and Hermione to get together. The kiss in GOF from Hermione was a bit of a tease, gave me hope when there was none. As the series progressed I could tell Hermione and Ron would end up together. Unlike the majority of everybody else, I was disappointed. I don't have anything against Ron per se, but he's my least favorite out of the trio.

But as I said, the majority of everybody else I know, online or off, is a Ron/Hermione shipper for whatever reason.
cakeandmilk
Honestly, my family couldn't care less about Harry Potter. I tried to get them addicted, if not keen, by making them watch the movies over and over again but as soon as I press the play button all I hear from them are snores, which doesn't help at all in my end goal to make them see that Harry and Hermione are destined for each other!

Whew! That's a long one. But hey, I don't mind their incessant rants about fictional characters as much as they don't mind my obsession with H/Hr.

As with my friends, let's just say I've convinced 3 people to go for H/Hr for the past six years I've been a shipper. Doesn't say much about me. sweatdrop.gif
It's not that I'm not trying. I do, I swear I do. But they just don't get it.

I was the first in my family to hear about HP when it came out so my mum bought me the books for christmas when I was 12. Of course I didn't have them to myself for long my brother started reading them and went nuts with the rest of the books and I got them back looking like they had been eaten by a dog lol. I then really got into them and by the GOF I thought harry and hermione belonged together and have been a H/Hr nut ever since. Although I havent met any other H/Hr shippers to date (except on portkey smile.gif)

I felt very alone at the HP conference this summer, being the only one that I knew of that loves H/Hr. I went to the "trial" of JKR in which we found her guilty of fraud and contributing to the delinquency of minors. I told one lady(who was in Slytherin robes by the way) what happened at the Ron discussion and she told me I have to stand up to the Herons. It's kind of difficult to make yourself heard, when your in a room filled with Ron sympathizers. So only my family and one other friend of mine who's read the books, like H/Hr as much as I do. It still comes down to preference-you either like petty bickering, which was the basis of R/Hr's relationship or the mature relationship that we saw H/Hr had.

When I first watched HP, I couldn't care less about it. (I know; so naive!) But when my friends started to introduce more of it to me, I began to nurture a special spot for HP in my heart.
