frusty.gif I can't believe how stupid I am! I was watching one of my favorite youtube videos and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Who is exactly like Harry and Hermione?

Temperance Brennan and Seeley Booth from the Fox show Bones. wub.gif

Temperance, or "Bones" as Booth likes to call her (kind of like 'Mione, for those of you who like that nickname) is super smart, she is a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institute, she deals with bones obviously, and she doesn't know how to get along with people very well. At the beginning of the show she's EXACTLY like Hermione was at the beginning of HP, I mean, she really didn't have any good best friends and most people would have described her as a know it all, like Hermione!

Her FBI partner is Booth, who is exactly like Harry. He isn't very open with other people but he knows how to deal with them. He's the hero, just like Harry. He really only opens up to Tempe, really showing what he holds inside, just like Harry with Hermione, Godric's Hollow anyone?, and Tempe learns from Booth how to just be a regular person, instead of a brain. Tempe even dates guys who are just like Ron, you know, that so called sexual tension fighting crap?

One guy who comes to mind is Sully. He and Tempe meet and don't seem to like each other at first because they kind of fight a lot, but then they get together, blah blah blah, and then Sully decides he doesn't like being an FBI agent so he sails off on a boat, asking Tempe to come with him, but she doesn't want to, so he sails away, without her. Of course Booth is waiting for her after she says goodbye to Sully. (The tent scene where Ron decides hunting horcruxes isn't fun anymore and leaves, but asks Hermione to come, but she chooses Harry)

Okay, I'll shut up now but here a couple of links so you can decide for yourself!

Ah, I love Heroes griffyndorgirl! I never thought about Claire and Peter though, but I can see where you're coming from.

aww_dan/emma_h/hr_=): Nice job on the mix!

I have one couple to suggest that I haven't seen in here, and that's Hektor and Andromache in the Iliad.
Now, of course they're not exactly like Harry and Hermione (who is?), but they share a few things in common with their counterparts.

For example: Hektor is couragous, brave to a fault, a great warrior, but at the same time, shows his softer side when he's with Andromache and their son.

Andromache is a very strong woman. She doesn't hang out with the other women while the battle rages, but instead waits by the gates of the city, watching the battle, and, of course, waiting for Hektor. She goes far beyond what is expected of women during that day and age- even outrageously so when she gives Hektor military advice (when she tells him to defend the city).

In their own scene together in the Iliad, which takes place by the city gates (in my opinion the best scene of the poem) you can easily see the respect and love they hold for one another. You see Hektor's softer side, when he takes off his helmet, that he only shows for his wife and son. They both know he will die if he goes back into battle, but Hektor says he must- not only for his own honor, but also for the honor of Andromache- he fights for her.

I could absolutely see that scene as a farewell scene between Harry and Hermione before he goes to fight, though I would wish a better ending for them than what occurs in the Iliad.

Anyways, that's just my two-cents worth.

For my class The Greeks, we read that part in the Iliad to prepare us for the home and honor theme of The Odyssey, which we read in full. I thought it was horribly bittersweet, when his son is scared of his helmet and Hektor laughs, takes it off, and plays with him. Then he says goodbye to Andromache and...then he's gone. So sad. I can see the similarities, nice one.

I KNOW! I just can't believe that we didn't see it before! Booth and Bones even look like Harry and Hermione, I mean, how crazy are we for not noticing how EXACTLY alike they are?!?!? B/B are the perfect example of best friends, they have funny entertaining banter, not verbally abusive banter that results in crying and attack birds, and they don't know that they love each other! JUST LIKE HARRY AND HERMIONE!

Don't you think that Sully is exactly like Ron? I am so dumb I just can't believe I didn't see it before! whistling.gif

yes! sully & ron are so alike they are basically based off of each other!!
you know all those episodes where people think that B&B are a couple but they're not-doesn't that remind you of when people thought that h&hr were a couple? (alot of this in GoF)

YES! Practically everyone is like "Are you two...?" "No no no, of course not!" Even Sully thought there was something more between them! It's exactly like Ron and the locket scene, Harry said that Hermione was like a sister to him, well of course he'd say that after finally knowing for sure how his best friend felt about his other best friend! He's not going to want to stand in the way! Just like when Sully asked Booth if he wanted to be more than friends with Tempe, Booth was like "Uhhh, no of course not, aww no you've got it all wrong!" He's wasn't about to stand in the way either!

They are just like H/Hr because they don't even know they are in love. This show has to be based off of Harry Potter I swear to you, lol. Tempe dates very Ron-like guys, really all of the guys she's dated or flirted with have been like Ron, and Booth dates women like Ginny (I really really hate Cam, so she can be Ginny. whistling.gif ) and we just can't wait for "it" to finally hit them that they've been with the wrong people the whole entire time and really love each other.

Bones is a the happy Harry/Hermione ending! thumbup.gif

Don't you think that the way Tempe is acting right now, towards Booth, you know, not wanting to go out in the field with him, is kind of like Hermione in HBP, in the way that she sort of stopped supporting him a little, with the whole Malfoy obsession and potions book? It seems like Booth lost his support, Tempe, like Harry lost his, Hermione.

Any comic, Y: The Last Man fan here?

Yorick and 355 reminded me of H/Hr xD

I just read issue 58

Yorick goes to 355, after realizing he doesn't love Beth.

"what made me realize I don't want to die, no matter how miserable life gets? - it was you, agent 355"

"At the time, I didn't know what it meant, I... that's not true. I always knew, I just didn't want to know."

"I knew I wanted to keep living in any world that YOU wre part of..."

"for a million reasons, I needed to believe that Beth was why I kept putting one foot in front of the other, but it wasn't who I was marching towards... it's who was marching next to me every step of the way."

OMG I haven't rread the Illiad since high school...and that is so true. I guess that just goes to show why the Illiad is epic....aww that part with Hektor and his wife/son are one of the reasons I kept reading that book blush.gif that prt was so sweet....if only DH coud've had a prt like that in there...but alas...we just get surface "sweetness" w/ h/g and and r/hr

Hmmm.... I'll just make a list and a short description.

Troy/Gabriella(High School Musical)-Smart Girl, Sweet Jock..Ring a bell?

Tidus/Yuna(Final Fantasy X)-The two trust each other similar to H/Hr.

Will/Elizabeth(Pirates of the Caribbean)- Somehow I find Kiera Knightley similar to a grown up version of Emma Watson. Will has the same trust and care for
Elizabeth similar to Harry.

Jim/Pam(The Office)-I'm sure someone said this earlier.

Haruhi/Kyon(The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)-They have a strong bond of trust observed by some people around them. Also, inspite of Haruhi's embarassing antics, Kyon still sticks by her similar to H/Hr.

Monica/Chandler(F*R*I*E*N*D*S)-Again the acceptance of each other's personalities.

Well That's my short list. Hope you see my points.
ProfessorRaptor
Oh crap forgot three other couples:*sigh*

Kim/Ron(Kim Possible)-Trust, Need I say more?

Roxas/Olette(Kingdom Hearts II)- Not canonical but is supported by a lot of people.

Ash/Misty(Pokemon)-Before you grab that flamethrower, I'll just exclude the arguing point and point to Misty's constant concern for Ash. She constantly worries about Ash alot. Also Misty considers herself not that pretty but somehow Ash still is close to her. One Word, Acceptance. Similar to Harry not finding Hermione ugly.

Noah and Allie from The Notebook!!!!! (the way Noah waits for Allie and even has his own "distraction" b/c he sees her with another man and almost gives up...but she so comes back b/c of the house....why are good men so hard to find...I want a Noah!)

Vivian and Eddy Pretty Woman (they were just too cute for words!)

....if you can't tell...we so had a chick flick night!

I was watching Friends tonight and I thought Joey and Rachael! I know tons of people just love Ross and Rachael but Ross reminds me so much of Ron, especially the episode where Rachael and Joey try to date, and Ross freaks out. I know that is how Ron would react if Harry and Hermione got together but I would hope that that would not break them up.

In full reality, Monica and Chandler are most like H/Hr, and Joey and Rachael remind me of Draco and Ginny, while Ross and Phoebe are Ron and Luna, but I can't ever imagine them being together. lol. It was just the way that Ross was acting towards J/R that really really made me mad, so there you go. whistling.gif

I have recently gotten into Private Practice, the Gray's Anatomy spinoff. Two out of the three canon ships are H/Hr like. The third one, Addison/Pete, is sort of friendship based, but not close enough to call it alike.

Cooper/Violet: They are best friends. She is still obsessed with her now-married ex, but Cooper is definately in love with her. He wants her to be happy and wants what is best for her. He's something of a womenizer. Inspite of this, she offers him a no-strings one night stand, and he turns her down because with her, as he says, it could never be just nothing.

Sam/Naomi: They are divorced, but they are still very good friends. They are still in love with each other. They do fight, but they work it out. The help each other and their personalities mesh well. She's very Hermione like in her need to plan everything and have a system, while he's a procrastinator and a bit scatterbrained. In the last episode I watched, they had finally realized they still had feelings.

how about elinor and edward from sense and sensibility?

and i agree, booth and bones are totall harry hermione happy.gif too bad JKR didn't look at this forum

I just watched Buffy season 1 for the first time, and I've decided I like far too many ships already. Anyway, here are the ones that remind me of H/Hr, at least in some sense.

Buffy/Angel: They are protective of each other and fight together. They haven't really become friends yet, but there is the potential there.

Buffy/Xander: Close friends. No feelings yet, but they do care deeply for each other.

Willow/Xander: Close friends for even longer, and care very deeply. She has feelings for him even if he doesn't return them.

Buffy/Giles: Yes, not really super-H/Hr-like, but there are similarities. He is a lot like Hermione. He's a brain who loves books and studying and thinks books hold all the answers. Buffy is Harry. She's a fighter who thinks that action is the solution to anything. Both of them are super protective of each other. Although they have a mentor/student bond, I think they are more friends than anything.

I've finally managed to catalogue all the different couples who remind people of Harry/Hermione. I would post it here, but it's quite a long list-- 8 pages in Word, so I dunno if anyone wants me to do that. If anyone would like to see the list though, I'd be happy to share it with you.

Also, I wanted to add Chris/Isabella from the game Freedom Fighters. I don't know why. I suppose it's because they're both powerful characters who look out for each other.

I remember that there was a discussion sort of on Kal Ho Na Ho. And I said they're situation was very close to Harry/Hermione and someone said that Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was. Well I just saw KANK and I dont think so. The situations of the characters of Dev and Maya are just too different. Dev is less accepting of Maya being with something else. And there isnt that friendship that connects the families. Rishi was almost the same as Ron in that he did love Maya and he did care for her. He didnt do anything wrong. They just weren't meant for eachother. But in Kal Ho Na Ho, the main character puts the girl aside not just because he believes he's going to die, but that he is aware of Rohit's feelings and his love for Naina. Much more like Harry.

Anyway KANK was horribly sad despite its cliches. There were moments that had me just sobbing!

Will/Lyra (his dark Materials) anybody who read it knows why...

Mulder/Scully (x-files) anybody who's seen the end knows why...

Jack/Sam (Stargate) oh god yes... trust, communication, understanding

John/Aeryn (Farscape) once again, trust communication, and trying to understand the other side when argument occurs.

Willow/Tara (Buffy) friendship turned love. and again TCU.

Has anyone see the film The Miracle Worker? Helen and Anne's relationship made me think of Harry and Hermione. Anne does what she thinks is best for Helen's welfare, even though Helen hates her for it. Hermione always acts in Harry's interest, even though it angers him eg. reporting his broom, arguing with him over Sirius. By contrast, Helen's relationship with her mother reminded me of Harry and Ginny. Helen's mother loves her, but indulges her in her bad behaviour and tantrums. Ginny will go along with Harry's wishes, even though she isn't aware of the full situation, or she allows him to get off easy on using the spell on Draco. Helen and Anne= right, Helen and her mother=easy.

Thats a really intresting way of looking at it and you're tottaly right. It's tottaly the way I look at Harry and Hermione's realationship. Hermione is doing and looking out for what is best for Harry, even though she knows that he wont like it. And half the time he gets super irritated at her for it. But she's almost always right. Also I tottaly agree with the comparison you made with Helen's mother and her.

another couple that reminds me, and I don't see in this list... actually, they're 2 couples from the anime Spiral ~suiri no kizuna~

First, Ayumu + Hiyono

Ayumu is very 'chosen-one' like in the mystery surrounding The Blade Children, he's broody, super talented at everything he does like playing the piano, cooking, and he's super intelligent, etc but he never truly believes on himself, even when he's in fact right.

Hiyono is a reporter in Ayumu's school, and she meets him on the first episode when he's accused of a murder. At first Hiyono just reports on the case, but throughout the show she becomes Ayumu's aid, and he often asks her for information on other characters, since Hiyono has sources and seems to be a soft-core hacker. She helps him a lot, and supports him... she has the confidence in him that he lacks.

Whenever Hiyono's in danger, Ayumu steps it up, and everyone recognizes it. Anyway, what sort of reminded me was on the last couple of episodes, when Ayumu has truly given up and doesn't seem to care anymore - Hiyono is trying to get him to care again, but he isn't responding, so she slaps him. He's shocked, and then she goes something like "this is another Ayumu, when the real Ayumu comes back please tell him to be energetic, just like he always is..." and looks at him smiling, then goes.

The other couple is Ryoko + Kousuke. They both know each other from before, and Kousuke cares for Ryoko, and Ryoko cares for Kousuke. They've got each other, even if fate gets in their way...

I'm just randomly dropping by here; so I'm adding a few thoughts;

Sidney/Vaughn from Alias. Forever will stand out to me like a H/Hr kind of pairing. They work so amazingly great together, and they compliment each other so fantastically. I loved them all through the 5 seasons, and I'm so, so, happy they got their happy ending.

A couple I love who didn't; are Laurie and Jo from Little Women. I will always hate that second book. They were building up to be a great love story all through the first book (Quite like Harry and Hermione); and the second killed them out of the blue. I will always be scarred by Laurie/Jo. They were best friends, they knew each other like no one else. They had pure and honest love for each other; and it all went to pot because the author was trying to prove something. Lame.
GreyWolf
Alright, this is weird. I was watching Sleepy Hollow one day and one part in the movie was the spitting image of how I see Harry's and Hermione's relationship:
Crane is having a nightmare (flashback to his mother's death). He leaps up out of bed only to be caught and held by Katrina, who was sitting at his bedside all night.

Very touching, but definitely how I see the two of them. No Question.

The End.
Grey
GuardianMedic
YES! Exactly!

Because you Hermione would do the exact same thing!

Perfection!

Thanks Greywolf...

I'm pretty sure that it has been said already (many times probably), but I just watched "My Best Friend's Wedding" and I can't help but say, that every time I see it Micheal and Julianne just screams Harry/Hermione. Even their hair looks a bit similar to Harry and Hermione's. And all Julianne does... it just what Hermione would do. Go all the way to get what she wants, but eventually give up just to make Harry happy.

It's actually one of my favorite movies, but I just can't stand the ending. Actually it's just like with Harry Potter: I like the book all the way trough, but ending is just depressing. It's kind of funny...

Did I mention Inge Altenberg and Olaf Torvik from the film Sweet Land. Fantastic film!!

Olaf is a Norwegian immigrant in 1920s middle of nowhere USA, and his parents send him Inge, a German from a Norwegian village woman to marry.

Olaf is shy, introverted, and doesn't stand up for himself, though he always tries to help his friend, and live his life in the community.

Inge is strong-willed and helps Olaf learning how to stand up for himself, and when his whole community turns their back on Olaf, she's the one by his side helping him with his crop.

In the end, she says this with her accent "in my heart, I believe"

I feel that, as a Harmony shipper, in my heart, I believe... there's no papers, but it doesn't have to be real.

This may be a first, H/Hr being compared to a gay couple. Alice and Dana from The L Word. Personality wise they're not too common but the relationship has some similarities. Alice and Dana were long term friends before dating, however they didn't meet until adulthood. Alice was a journalist and had to interview Dana, a pro tennis player. The two like Harry and Hermione didn't get along at first. When Alice and Dana met the second time they became best friends and were pretty much insepertable.

The thing that really brought them together as a couple was Alice seeing Dana with Tonya. Tonya was a girl who only seemed to like Dana because of her celebrity status. She hated cats and killed Dana's cat, who she loved like a child. However Tonya was able to make it look like a natural death. Alice figured this out and went to tell Dana about it but ended up kissing her instead. They had a secret relationship for awhile until Dana finally dumped Tonya. That just makes me think that if we put the epilogue aside and think how Harry and Hermione would figure out romantic feelings for each other, it would most likely be them seeing the other with someone wrong for them. Hermione seeing Harry with star-struck Ginny who doesn't really know him or Harry seeing Hermione with Ron who treats her badly (who also might end up killing her cat.)
GuardianMedic
That's an excellent comparison!

And I think Ron very possible would get rid of Crookshanks... I mean we all know that the only person other than Hermione that Crookshanks likes is Harry... biggrin.gif Ron might get JEALOUS.....AGAIN!!!

Oh and by the way,
I already did a comparison to a gay couple... Willow and Tara from Buffy:TVS...

But I do like yours! smile.gif
Hermione Darcy Potter
Bob and Jillian from the reality televison show 'the Biggest Looser'. Last season, he hadn't seen in her in like a year and he gave her the biggest hug... it was like a 'jump your bones' kind of hug.

And on this season of the biggest looser, they decided to be the 'Ultimate Duo' which is how I've always seen Harry and Hermione.
star22
More Buffy pairings, since I've now seen through season 6.

Oz/Willow
Tara/Willow: I'm not quite as fond of this, as I'm really a fan of Oz/Willow and Xander/Willow, but it is still a very H/Hr-like relationship.
Spike/Buffy: I thought I'd never ship this, but they have really become friends in a way, and I really like Spike now and feel sorry for him.
Spike/Drucilla
Giles/Jenny
Xander/Anya: Not a whole lot of similarities, but they do look out for each other, and they have become friends as well as lovers.
Hermione Darcy Potter
Lois Lane and Clark Kent from Superman Returns.
Violas Rule
Daniel and Betty from Ugly Betty.

In season 4 however, Bette and Tina become friends again, even though Tina left Bette for a man, and Bette is already pursuing another relationship with a fellow artist. Throughout the 2nd half of this season, Tina starts regretting her decision of leaving Bette, and begins hanging out with her as a friend. Bette takes it as just friendship, thus begins asking for advice with her new relationship. Tina just agrees and helps Bette out with her relationship with Jodi.

However, you know Tina and Bette are for one another, because of a phone scene Bette and Tina have while Bette is trying to fix her relationship with Jodi, where Bette called Tina so Tina could advice her on what to say, and she says something like "she never should have left her, and that she will do everything for her to just be with her" - and when Bette hears those words, she just closes her eyes because it's obvious she wanted Tina saying those words to her instead. But in the end, Bette is going for Jodi and Tina can only support her friend. =P

And oh yeah, I was/am also a Dana/Alice shipper x'D I was so sad when she passed. RIP.

I remember when I first watched the show, I wasn't very aware of Xander/Anya, but on future viewings, they grew on me, and they've become one of my favorite couples... mainly because Anya is one of my favorite characters. (while growing up, I was a Buffy fan)

"newly human and strangely literal"

I liked how Xander didn't mind her being strangely literal, and try to talk her through what being human means. And I liked how Anya became a better human being, without losing her strange literalism.

In fact, Anya's fanlisting's title summarizes her perfectly, From Zero to Hero! I think she had a great character arc, and I know... it was bittersweet seeing her die like that. *SLASH!!* omg, what just happened?? go back, camera!! Go back!!

I think she'd be the Harry in the Xanya pairing, while Xander is the Hermione... even though he wasn't the smartest one, lol.

oh! and Harry didn't really know he cared for Anya until he saw VampSpike and a sleeping Anya on the episode Hush, where he thought Spike had bitten Anya, ha!

See... I've got my rambling on Xanya again...
star22
She dies? How horrible. I haven't seen season 7 yet. She isn't my favorite character, but she is very interesting. I love seeing her dealing with normal human emotions in new and interesting ways because she's not used to them. Her literalness is so funny, and Xander is very good for her. Although I still prefer him with Willow, I think that he and Anya worked well together.

And oh yeah, I was/am also a Dana/Alice shipper x'D I was so sad when she passed. RIP.

I was sad but it was easier for me because I already knew it was coming. I didn't start watching the show until the third season was already over. I'm in a few lesbian/bisexual girl groups in myspace (I'm bi) and they were advertising the "Dana Lives" t-shirt and I asked what it meant and they explained it.

I watched the first three seasons on DVD which I rented from netflix because I didn't have Showtime. However, I did convince my parents to get it but they canceled it after The Tudors season ended (a show they watched). They are going re-order for season five but I said it can wait until next week. I saw the premire at a party HRC held and they gave me a dvd of episode 502. This is all kind of wierd because after watching the first three episodes I thought it was okay but not great. I eventually got around to watching the rest of season one and then I was hooked.

Back to the shipper thing, I'll always love Dana/Alice. They were a great couple. I also think Lara was good for Dana and I like Alice's relationship with Tasha. It's pretty interesting because Alice is anti-war (atleast the current one in Iraq) and Tasha is in the National Guard, yet they still make their relationship work. I could never do that.

I liked Lara/Dana as well, but I hated the way it ended... I mean, I understood Dana, but I felt so sad for Lara who wanted to be there.

Off Topic~~
I began watching the show in Season 2 showing in Latin America, I thought it was okay looking as in production values, and style and the stories were sort of different. I googled the show after a while, and found out they were already finishing season 4, ha! So I got myself the eps I could get hold of...

Season 1 was really different looking, and I'm glad the season look much better now. Story-wise still is alrite, but I'm more drawn actors/characters than storylines... I think I like pretty much all characters, except for Jenny. She's the one character I've never learned to like.

Back on topic,
even though there's Bette/Tina, which at the beginning you sort of accept, and then you sort of get bored and annoyed, Season 4 - you begin to like them a bit more (at least me, because S4 they reminded me of H/Hr)... I'm still not sure about Tina, though. At the moment, she seems strong, but when Bette is around she's subdued.
Instead, I like Jodi (Marlee Matlin) more... Bette and Jodi seem more like equals to me, both roam free and have strong characters... but that could be troublesome since there's no balance. I guess I just find Jodi more interesting...
And Bette needs to learn how to take a step back and let the others be strong... well, as well as Jodi.

TV:
Cornelius Fillmore and Ingrid Third (FILLMORE!)

When I contributed that item, I had miscounted the number of FILLMORE! episodes: there were only 26, not 27. My apologies for the error.

Also, last month I realized for the first time that Ingrid's initials were "I.T." -- appropriate enough for a girl with a photographic memory!

Now on to new business. My favorite Western movie, THE BIG COUNTRY, contains a couple who have long seemed very Harmonian to me: Jim McKay and Julie Maragon.

Jim, an ex-sailor, travels from Baltimore to the west Texas town of San Rafael to marry Patricia Terrill, the only daughter (and only child) of Major Henry Terrill, who owns nearby Ladder Ranch. Jim had met her while she was at an Eastern finishing school.

Upon his arrival in town, Jim is met by the Major's foreman, Steve Leech, who escorts him to Julie's house where Patricia is waiting. Julie, the local schoolteacher, is Patricia's best friend. She also owns a ranch called the Big Muddy, but hasn't operated it since her grandfather Clem's death some six years earlier. (In Donald Hamilton's original novel, it was explained that old Clem had raised her after her parents were killed by Comanches.)

The aristocratic Major is engaged in a long-standing feud with the less-prosperous Rufus Hannassey, whose own spread is located in Blanco Canyon. For the past six years this feud has focused on trying to gain control of the Big Muddy, and especially of the vital water supply running through it.

When Jim and Patricia travel to Ladder in the buckboard Steve has provided, they are chased down by Rufus's four sons: Buck (the oldest, who's infatuated with Julie), Rafe, Dude and Cracker. The four (who had been drinking in town when Jim arrived) then rough up Jim because of his Eastern clothes and manners (which Steve, who himself covets Patricia, had regarded little more highly). Jim doesn't enjoy the experience, but he's had worse hazings at college, at sea and in ports all over the world. He makes no effort to defend himself, but Patricia tries to use first the buckboard's whip and then a rifle on the Hannassey brothers. Jim, who hadn't known she'd had the rifle, narrowly stops her from firing it!

The next morning, the Major uses this incident as an excuse to lead a punitive expedition against the Hannasseys. Jim refuses to participate in it; moreover, he's just irritated both Patricia and Steve by declining the latter's invitation to ride Old Thunder, a rogue horse. But later, with the Major and Steve riding on the Hannasseys, and Patricia riding off on her own, Jim tames the horse with only Ramon Gutierrez, the stable-keeper (who had once worked for the Maragons) watching.

At Blanco Canyon, the Major and his men find neither the Hannassey brothers nor Rufus; they nonetheless harass the unprotected women and children, and shoot up the structures (including, symbolically enough, the water tower). Moving on to San Rafael, they catch Rafe, Dude and Cracker (but not Buck, who manages to hide out until the invaders leave) and beat them up. This is apparently not the first such attack by the Terrills on the Hannasseys: that evening, at Ladder, Rufus crashes Jim and Patricia's engagement party to warn the Major that one more such incident will result in bloodshed.

The following morning, Jim, armed with a compass and two days' food, and leaving word with Ramon, rides out alone to explore the region he's been repeatedly told is a "big country (hence the film's title -- duh!)." His journey leads him, on the morning of the second day, to the Big Muddy, where he again meets Julie. She tells him of her desire to sell the property -- and also of her reluctance to sell it to either the Terrills or the Hannasseys, since either would withhold its water from the other, thus bloodily heightening the feud. Jim buys the property as a wedding present for Patricia, but intending to operate it independently and, as Clem Maragon had done, grant the Terrills and the Hannasseys equal water rights.

Back at Ladder, the Major and Patricia have become frantic at the thought of Jim being lost. Steve leads a search party through the area but, on the second night, it's Jim who finds them. Upon their return to Ladder, Jim denies having ever been lost, causing Steve to call him a liar. Jim refuses to rise to the bait and fight Steve publicly, thus marking himself as a coward in Patricia's eyes. Refusing to spend his life proving his courage to her, Jim decides that they should separate for a while. He moves into San Rafael the next day -- but not before waking up Steve later that night and fighting him privately. The fight ends in a draw and Jim asks Steve, "What did we prove?"

After Jim leaves, Julie visits Ladder. From her, Patricia learns that he rode Old Thunder "when it meant something to him (Julie tricks Ramon into confirming this)." Patricia wonders why, between that and refusing to fight Steve (publicly), Jim would be so "downright deceitful" in letting her think he was a coward if he loved her. Julie counters, "If you loved him, why would you think it in the first place? ...How many times does a man have to win you?" All Jim seems to be afraid of, she adds, is being considered a show-off. She also informs Patricia that Jim has bought the Big Muddy "as a wedding present for you."

Patricia then visits Jim in town (by way of returning a pair of caplock dueling pistols that had been Jim's gift to the Major), attempting a reconciliation. But when she learns that all the neighbors -- including the Hannasseys -- are to have access to the Big Muddy's water, it's the coup de grâce to their relationship. "You'll never see the day when you're half the man Henry Terrill is!" Patricia says in a bitter parting shot. (In the book, Patricia later became engaged to Steve.)

Meanwhile, without Jim's or Julie's knowledge, the Terrill hands, led by Steve, drive the Hannassey cattle away from the Big Muddy's water, causing the deaths of 24 head. The furious Rufus, remembering Buck's (delusional) boast that Julie is "sweet on him," has her abducted to Blanco Canyon so that she and Buck can be married, thus putting the Big Muddy "all in the family." Julie informs Rufus that she's repelled by the idea of marrying Buck -- and also that not she but Jim now owns the Big Muddy. Later that night Buck, fortified by corn liquor, tries to rape Julie but is stopped by Rufus, who (prophetically, as we'll see) warns him, "Someday I'm going to have to kill you."

The next day, the Major, having learned of Julie's predicament, leads a rescue party to the outskirts of Blanco Canyon. Jim soon joins them, believing that he can rescue Julie without bloodshed. Accompanied only by Ramon, he enters the heavily-guarded canyon to plead for Julie's freedom, showing Rufus his recorded deed to the Big Muddy in support of his plea. Rufus soon discerns that Jim and Julie have fallen in love (Patricia had dimly perceived Julie's love for Jim) -- and that Buck will fight Jim for Julie. Since the dueling pistols have been found in Jim's saddlebag, Rufus calls a duel between Jim and Buck. Buck fires before the signal (a habit from being a "fast draw" with a revolver), grazing Jim's forehead; Jim, though he could kill Buck right then and there, instead fires into the ground and starts to take Julie away. Buck completely snaps: he grabs a gun from one of the hands and tries to shoot the no-longer-armed Jim -- but is instead gunned down by Rufus.

A brief gun battle breaks out between the two camps. Then the Major and Rufus, having realized (with help from Steve on the one side and Jim on the other) that the feud is really a private war between the two of them, face each other in another duel -- this one with rifles. Both patriarchs end up dead; Jim and Julie, assisted by Ramon, then prepare to start a new life on the Big Muddy.

Maybe Jim McKay has a cooler head than does Harry, but it might be useful to see him as a possible Harry. They both desire a peaceful life; neither will fight simply to prove his courage, preferring to do so only for a greater good.

It's fairly obvious, I think, that Julie Maragon is very much like Hermione -- and Patricia Terrill very much like Ginny. The scene in which the two argue about Jim after he leaves Ladder shows how Julie understands him better than Patricia ever will. Ramon Gutierrez underscores this in telling them both, "A man like him is very rare."

Speaking of Ramon, I think he's somewhat like Hagrid. Not only are they both keepers of beasts, but both are gentle, warm-hearted, and capable of great loyalty.

Patricia's affection for her father, the Major, seems disturbingly more than filial.

It's worth noting, too, that Buck Hannassey is red-haired and (at least in the film) has a considerable appetite. And his attempts to rape Julie and kill an unarmed Jim are obvious acts of spite.

I'm not sure, however, who parallels Major Henry Terrill, Rufus Hannassey or Steve Leech in the HP series. Oh, well...

(red coloring mine) OMG! I am sooo glad I'm not the only one who's read Son of the Shadows! First off, awesome book. Second off, probably the closest to a H/Hr relationship I've run across. Love Prosper/Hornet as well. Unfortunately, in the book, it was only implied. In the movie however.... wub.gif Woo, getting off topic.

I agreed with a lot of your list (I couldn't account for a few lists, like anime and video games, so I can't weigh in on those tongue.gif), but there were a few I ran across that while close and adorable, didn't strike me as very H/Hr. Like:

Calvin/Meg
- I've actually been re-reading this series tongue.gif. While many similarities can be made, Calvin and Meg are actually A LOT closer to each other than Harry and Hermione are. H/Hr are close, and yes, they can tell when something is bothering the other, but the borderline telepathic relationship is more the stuff of fanfiction than canon. The fact that Hermione often knows what Harry is up to is usually by facial expression or body language, as he's usually uncomfortable around her when he knows he's done something he shouldn't have. Whereas Calvin and Meg actually do have a telepathic connection....found and exploited in A Wind in the Door. And while H/Hr are comfortable with hugs and other touches, Calvin and Meg took it up a step further in their books.

I think we should also take a look at exactly how that relationship started. If it hadn't been for Mrs. Which invitin Calvin along in A Wrinkle in Time, Meg would have gone on hating him forever. Meg has a hard time trusting him in the beginning, until Charles Wallace gives him the okay, unlike H/Hr, which had trust since day one of their frienship. That relationship has more of an element of fate in it because of this than H/Hr. Not to mention there was only a short time of friendship, not the extended period that H/Hr experienced. And while they look out for each other just as H/Hr do, Calvin pretty much took it upon himself to be Meg and Charles Wallace's bodyguard throughout A Wrinkle in Time and A Wind in the Door. And while I love both C/M and H/Hr, re-reading the books has me at a lost to find more similiarites between them than the fact that they're comfortable around each other. C/M have much more of an intense relationship, both in friendship and more. H/Hr can live without each other for periods of time perfectly fine, whereas Meg relies on Calvin to be there, something he willingly does.

Anne/Gilbert
- Don't get me wrong, I can see where this can be H/Hr...but only for one part of the series. To look at it on a whole, I find the similiarities to aim more towards a Lily/James relationship, because of their attitudes towards each other, not to mention physical appearences (coincidence I realized in the middle of Anne of the Island once, doesn't really have a bearing on my disagreement).

If you read through the first book, Gilbert's actions scream James Potter all over. He's arrogant, popular, and thinks he can get any girl he wants...including Anne. However, she hates him. Vehemently. Just like Lily. Also like Lily, Anne is the top of her class. I'm not sure if we're given any indication of James' GPA in the books, so I can't make a comparison there. Gilbert tries to impress her, and falls short. Yet doesn't lose hope. Rather like James.

And, like James, eventually Gilbert becomes less arrogant, less pompous, and he and Anne at least get on civil terms with each other. Eventually, Anne falls in love with him, and they get married. Same with Lily. While I can see where their closeness of friendship could be interpreted as H/Hr, the whole situation just screams J/L to me.

I think I had more....but I'm tired....all in all, though, excellent list....so many couples!

I love these 2. One of my favorite movies too with a horribly sad ending.

A Walk to Remember - Jamie/Landon

I never really understood how Jamie/Landon is like H/Hr. Could someone please explain it to me?

I have two couples that remind me of H/Hr.

One is Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan on Smallville. cool.gif

They are best friends and Chloe had a major crush on Clark. If the story of Smallville was only told from Clark's point of view we would NEVER know that she liked him like that. Even though seeing through his eyes we would see how much she cares. In the end Chloe Sullivan moved on to Jimmy Olsen. While she still cares for Clark, and will do anything for him (like Hermione) he only sees them as friends.

One scenes that was similar to Harry and Hermione's relationship was at the beginning of season 7. Chloe used her powers to save her cousin Lois Lane appearing to die in the process. Clark when finding out could hardly breathe or move. He fortunately heard her with his superhearing in the morgue. While it was not infront of Clark he had a similar reaction to Harry when Hermione was hit with the purple curse. He froze and his mind was screaming in panic. Then the relief when she was alive. wub.gif

That is not mentioning that Clark chose the popular, pretty girl Lana Lang over his friend since 8th grade. online2long.gif

The other couple that reminds me of H/Hr is Robin and Raven from Teen Titans. blush.gif

Robin and Raven work well together even finishing each others sentences. Especially season 4. Raven was the one with the terrible destiny and Robin was the one that stuck by her and gave her the hope that saved her. Robin appears to only feel like Raven is a sister to him. He instead is in love with a red head on the team, Starfire. The pretty, popular alien bubble head. online2long.gif

Both of these ships were from a long road of failed to develop relationships on both shows that started with Harry and Hermione not happening. sleep.gif

I only hope that the only other ship I care about does not end up the same way. Naruto and Hinata. thumbup.gif

I pray to Kami (the Divide) that this will be. So far not looking too good, but a better chance than some others.

Either way I hope that it will work out.

Probably the closeness of the relationship. While I love the couple, I don't really think it fits well.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Robin and Marian from the Robin Hood series that is on BBC.

You have Robin who has Harry's Saving People thing, I mean honestly giving up his earldom to live in the forest, and steal from the rich to feed the poor. Then Marian a strong willed kick butt female who has enough brains to help people and not be caught by the idiot sheriff (Midnight Watchman anyone). She also has to pull Robin's rear out of the fire more often than not, like Hermione does Harry.

I'm a former General Hospital fan and I also see similarities to Georgie and Spinelli another doomed love. Georgie is smart and intelligent like Hermione who loves Spinelli quietly never making waves while he lusts after every girl but her, Lulu*cough*Ginny*cough*, and Spinelli is some one who feels so out of place the way that Harry felt about being a part of the wizarding world.

That's my opinion.

I was watching Law and Order Special Victim, and although they aren't a couple, Olivia and Elliot remind me of Harry and Hermione.

Olivia and Elliot are soulmates on the job though. Olivia is brilliant, but emotional. And Elliot is impulsive, occasionally reckless, but has great intuition.

My guess is that by the end of the show's run, Elliot and Olivia will end up together though..despite what they say now.

Refresh my memory please. Elliot is divorced with a son and a daughter, both elementary aged. But what is Olivia's marital status?

I do enjoy watching these two on the series. He's cute and she's so pretty.

An FYI: do you know that Jayne Mansfield was Mariska Hargitay's (Olivia) mother? Jayne Mansfield died in an auto accident and she was nearly decapitated, little Mariska was in the back seat and almost died of her injuries.

Well heres a different one! Now I'm not a very religious person but I'd have to say Harry and Hermione's realationship ABSOLUTLEY reminds me of Krishna and Radha from Hinduism. Its by far the most pure, romantic aspect of Hinduism. Though their realationship transcends just a simple romance.

Radha was one of Krishna's primary deities and devotees. Krishna in his youth used to play with the Gopi's or cowherd girls. This is supposed to symbolise the souls need of interaction with God. All the Gopis fell for his irresistable charm, and dance around him as he played the flute. But Radha was his favourite. They grew up playing together and were childhood friends and soulmates. They became lovers when they got older but hid their realationship from society. They wanted to remain together but he had to leave. She always waited for him. Another thing that was simmilar was their love in seperation, as Radha was forced to marry someone else.

Radha was his consort in 'His Heart and Soul' as the Gita says. In the Gita her love for him is regarded as the highest value because of its endlessness and unconditional nature. She was known as 'She who gives pleasure to Krishna' but in a spiritual way rather than sexual.

This was a very badly written interpretation of their realationship so I apologize. The spirituality, pureness, and deepness that this realationship is known for is super hard to convey. You should definatly read some stuff on it to get the full extent. Their love in eachother was so strong that still in India when they're is prayer of Krishna, Radha's name is always there. They are always associated with eachother whether it be art or music or anything.
