Sen/Chihiro and Haku of Spirited Away.
Sen has brown hair and brown eyes. Haku has black hair (although not unruly) and green eyes.
Sen is pure human (muggle, I dare say) and Haku, well he's a big guy in the Spirit World.
Haku is very protective of Sen and Sen would do anything to help Haku, even if it means getting in trouble herself.

I don't see any similarities between Dawson/Joey and Harry/Hermione. Ok, Hermione is a bit like Joey, but Harry is definitely no Dawson. Dawson was selfish, patronising and thinks that everyone is completely below him. I never realised what an arse he was until I was watching season three the other day...he's horrible! I think the reason why he wanted Joey was put well in the boat race episode...he didn't want to lose Joey, meaning he wanted to win. Pacey wanted Joey for her, not to win. Dawson was also very mean to Jen in seasons 1 + 2. Also, before Pacey and Joey got together, they dated Jack and Andy, who were brother and sister. Ron and Ginny, eh? Though I don't think that Ron is like Jack, but Ginny is kinda a merged form of Andy and Jen. I don't think that Dawson fits into any character in HP. I also don't see any similarities between Ron and Pacey, except for the fact that they're both funny.

I'm not really sure since I don't watch Dawson's Creek, but I think the similarities are in the type of relationship, not in the characters. From what I know, Dawson and Joey were best friends before they started going out. That is why their relationships are similar.

I liken the whole set up to the novel "Emma" where Hermione's Emma, Harry's Mr. Knightly and Ron's Frank Churchill. Hermione thinks Ron's in love with her and Ron plays it up but is actually in love with someone else. Meanwhile, Hermione and Harry share a deep friendship in which feelings develop into love.

As long as JKR does not put something on her website officially saying that H/Hr will NEVER happen in canon, I'd like to think that this is actually what she's aiming for -- except that there's a gender switch involved. Since the books are from Harry's POV, Harry would be Emma, and Hermione (the long-time friend who offers wise counsel) would be Mr. Knightley, and GINNY would be Frank Churchill. I think
Lissy talked about Ginny-as-Frank on another thread but I don't remember exactly where.

That actually makes more sense that Hermione being Emma. I tend to automatically take things from Hermione's POV just because she's my favorite character, and I got influenced by her own "matchmaking" with Harry and Cho, but you're right about Harry being Emma and Hermione being Mr. Knightly! And I've never had problems with gender switching, either.

I forget if I have mentioned this on this thread or not. But, I don't feel like sifting through 7 pages! So, here it goes...
... I have always loved Fox Mulder and Dana Scully of the X-Files. Harry and Hermione do remind me of them too. Mulder and Scully were friends for a long time before they finally became lovers. I see the parallel with H/Hr. I'm hoping that Harry and Hermione also fall in love as well. I enjoy the Mulder and Scully fan fiction too. Even after 3 years that the X-Files terminated, new fan fiction is written! How's that for a strong fandom?! If JKR insists on making it OBHWF in the end of her HP series, then I hope that H/Hr fan fiction takes off like gang busters and we continue to see new stories years after book 7 has collected dust!

I'm suddenly struck by the idea of Midsummer Night's Dream, where the four characters are mismatched because Puck mixed up the love nectar.
Let me run this down the characters:
Oberon, the fairy king (ahaha!) - Ron
Titania, the fairy queen (double ahaha!) - Luna
Lysander - Harry
Hermia - who else?
Demetrius - honestly... I don't know who this guy is.
Helena - Ginny
Puck - let's just say, for the sake of Hogwartism, that he represents the love potion.
Oberon entrusts Puck to administer the love potions to the proper players so that his wife, Titania, would obey his commands. Fortunately for Titania and unfortunately for everyone else, Puck's a mischievous little jester and administers the love potion to Lysander who was supposed to be in love with Hermia. When Lysander wakes up from his drugged slumber and first lays eyes on Helena, chaos ensues. Demetrius, in love with Hermia, complicates matters.
It's a stretch of the imagination, but I'm just very tickled at the idea.

AdamantEve, you are quite right. There's even an essay about it here at Portkey somewhere. I'll try and find it. Before HBP came out, the vast majority of us saw the Harry/Hermione/Ron/Luna situation to be like that of Lysander/Hermia/Demetrius/Helena. Alas, HBP screwed that up.
See we have
Harry < -- > Hermione < -- Ron < -- Luna.
This is similar to what happened in AMND
Lysander < -- > Hermia < -- Demetrius < -- Helena.
But in the end it turns out
Harry < -- > Hermione
Ron < -- > Luna
Lysander < -- > Hermia
Demetrius < -- > Helena.
Even the characters are similar.

I'm in agreement with the idea of Harry and Hermione being a lot like James and Lily (especially when you look at their personalities). To take that parallel one step further, Ron is sort of like Sirius (best friend to the two of them). Some people might even want to take things one step further and try to identify who Pettigrew might be in that case, but I haven't been able to figure that out yet. Some people on this forum might want to suggest Ginny for the role, but I'm not totally buying that argument yet. If JKR does play with the parallelism I've mentioned, that may offer us a hint of what is to come in the 7th book, with somebody that has befriended the Trio betraying them in the end (by whomever is represented by Pettigrew).

Somebody said this in the previous thread, but definitely Cory/Topanga from Boy Meets World. If you just watch the first time they get together... Topanga tells him that it's just her, that they've been friends forever, and they've always been able to talk to one another, and Cory replies that's what was making it so difficult for him... So squeeable... *hugs her DVDs*. Most definitely Cory/Topanga. And, although Cory isn't that much like Harry, Topanga is very similiar to Hermione. Well, at least until season four or five...when Topanga underwent the HBP personality machine.

I find it hard to compare Harry and Hermione.
I believe you no couples are the same. they're all different.

different situation, characters, personality. But I think you can group certain couples with each other.
Harry and Hermione are very hard to group. They are hard to group because they're story hasn't ended yet, we don't know how they'll end up. Who knows they could end up in almost anygroup or maybe they'll just be friends. Its really up to J.K Rowling.

I definitely agree with the Cory/Topanga thing.
To me, Lizzie and Gordo on 'Lizzie McGuire' remind me of H/Hr. Except you'd need to do a gender switch: Harry=Lizzie, being the main character and all; Hermione=Gordo, the best friend. And Ron could even be Miranda, their other best friend. I'm not sure if the personalities fit, but Lizzie and Harry do tend to get themselves and their friends into a bit of trouble, or at least possible trouble. Not to mention that Harry has a 'saving people thing' and Lizzie tends to help a lot of people out, even if they're her enemy. Not to mention that Hermione and Gordo both are extremely intelligent, and they are always willing to help Harry or Lizzie.

I think that William/Penny Lane from Almost Famous are a lot like Harry/Hermione with William being Harry and Hermione being Penny Lane. They aren't really like the characters but the situation is the same. William is very close to Penny but Penny is kinda with this guy Russel(Ron) who is actually good friends with Will and William is kinda but not really with other girls. They tell eachother things they've never told anyone else (ex. Penny tells Will her real name) and then William confesses his love for her when he realizes he's gonna lose her. so yeah...definatly William/Penny Lane situation is like the Harry/Hermione situation. there's even a Ron thrown in there.

I'd definetly say Cordy and Angel from Angel the Series. Firstly, Angel and Harry are very alike, both are broody, tortured souls. Hermione and Cordelia are nothing like each other, but they do have one very similiar retiscent quality - both are bona fide heroines who have a willigness to stand by and believe in their man no matter what. Plus, C/A's story is very much like H/Hr's. They are best friends who have known each other for years and dpend on and trust each other more than anyone else. That type of love story greatly appeals to me and that's why i adore Harmony so much.

Mork/Mindy from Mork and Mindy. Friends first, then they fall in love. They aren't much like H and Hr in personality, but their relationship fits.
Quinn/Wade from Sliders: Best friends who then fell in love. Quinn is a lot like Hermione, though Wade isn't much like Harry. Actually, Quinn is like Harry too.
Totally agree with Cory/Topanga too. I have just recently gotten into this show, and the relationship is so much alike it is scary. They even have a trio with Sean in the mix.
Can't agree with the Cordy/Angel thing, though. Too much of a Buffy/Angel shipper. That relationship, though, is a lot like H/Hr, IMO.

Pazu and Sheeta from Laputa - Castle in the Sky
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092067/They have exactly the kind of love that Pazu and Sheeta share. They have a mutual need for each other, feel lost without each other, and genuinely care a lot about each other. It is all very innocent, they do not speak of this love they have for each other, they do not kiss, much less have sex or anything like that, yet they are able to feel that the love is mutual and they draw their strengths and bravery from it. There are sweet moments of hugging and some hand holding (very much like the werewolf scene at the end of the PoA movie).
Exactly the kind of love that I imagine Harry and Hermione to share. The kind of love one feels without having to share kisses or have sex. The sweetest and truest kind of love.
I highly recommend getting ahold of this movie if you have not watched it. My favourite movie ever.

I have a ship to add -
Mark/Roger from RENT - At the beginning of the play Roger, like Harry, has gone through some horrible things within the past year - his girlfirend killed herself, he went through heroin withdrawal and he found out he is HIV+. He is withdrawan and moody and hides from the rest of the world. Mark, his roommate and best friend, has been there with him for the whole time - he is very loyal to Roger. Mark tries to get Roger to get out of their apartment, but Roger refuses. Then Mimi comes along and does manage to get him out of the apartment and get him to live again, but they fight a lot and eventually break up. They get back together in the end, but Mimi almost died (presumably from complications with AIDS) and it doesn't seem she'll live very long, so there it isn't a big leap to think Mark and Roger could get together.
I see Mimi as Ginny - she made Roger/Harry happy for a little while, but it didn't last, and Mark/Hermione is still around at the end for Roger to possibly get together with.

Mulder and Scully - she's rational, he's ... not. Both are reaaaaaally smart, but where he's intuitive and tends to be a loner, she's a scientist, more by-the-book and has a family that she gradually loses touch with as his world becomes her own. Here here! I think this is spot onPapertrail!! what about...Lois and Clark, from the TV series....
I definitely see the parallells between M/S and H/Hr. Harry and Mulder are very similar characters and I wonder if JKR was influenced by TXF at all when she was conceiving the character - the show was very popular when she was writing the first books, right?
What do they have in common?
- A traumatic childhood experience that has marked them for life (Harry literally, Mulder figuratively)
- They are famous in certain circles (Harry in wizarding world, Mulder in the conspiracy geek world)
- They spend their time trying to prove the existence of something most don't want to believe in (Voldemort vs. Alien/Govt Conspiracy)
- They have a "saving people thing"
- They have "friends in high places" as well as enemies
- They don't play by the rules
- They both have a thing for redheads (sorry!)
As for Hermione and Scully - the characters are similar, too for the reasons PaperTrail mentioned above. I also want to mention that it took SEVEN seasons on the show before they got together. Perhaps in JKRs world, SEVEN will be their lucky number as well?
But who is Ron? Is he Skinner? The Lone Gunmen? (they did provide comic relief, you know)

I nearly fell off my chair when I read this post. I
love Mulder and Scully. In fact I just watched a marathon of the X-Files on the SciFi station today. I am equally obsessed with the X-Files as I am with Harry Potter!
Mulder does have a thing for Scully, who is a redhead, but if you recall, he preferred tall, leggy, buxom brunettes before he fell in love with Scully.
And yes, it did take them seven seasons to finally get together. They were in love, but each was reluctant to admit it to the other. I blame Chris Carter! i had read somewhere a while ago that Carter wanted Scully and Skinner to get together. Can you believe this? I like Skinnner but I just adore Mulder with Scully. They, like H/Hr, belong together.
I like your way of thinkig 'glugglug' - perhaps the number 7 is the lucky number for H/Hr!!! Maybe it will be H/Hr in book 7!
